Checklist: July To-Dos for Homeowners

Drain and repair of home hot water heating tank during the month of July.

Summer is fun, but by July it may be so hot you’re tempted to stay inside 24-7. Here’s a July To-Dos list of indoor home maintenance chores to keep you busy.

Water Heater Maintenance

To prevent sediment accumulation, it’s wise to drain the water heater tank periodically. First, turn off the electricity or gas to the heater. Attach a garden hose to the drain port at the bottom and run it outside. Turn off the cold water supply valve at the top, open the pressure relief valve, then open the drain valve. Let all the water drain. Open the cold water supply valve again and let the water flush out the tank till it runs clear. Close the drain port, close the pressure valve and restart the electricity or gas pilot.

Clean Bathroom Drains

If the bathroom tub, sink or shower drains slowly, it’s likely accumulated hair and soap scum is lodged in the drain pipe. Disassemble the drain plug, then with a drain-cleaning wand from a home improvement store, or with a set of needle-nosed pliers, remove the blockage. Afterward, flush with a mixture of water and bleach before replacing the drain plug.

Prepare for July Hurricane Season

July 1 is the start of hurricane season, which peaks in August-September, and continues through Dec. 1. Prep now with a “bug out” kit consisting of flashlights and batteries, cases of bottled water, nonperishable foods such as canned goods and granola bars, a first aid kit, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, wet wipes, a battery or crank-powered radio, mosquito repellant, sunscreen, and cash.

Pet Care

If you have outdoor pets, make sure they have plenty of water and shade. Extreme temperatures in any season are hard on pets. And never leave a pet in a hot parked car.

Conserve Water in July Heat

With less rain, make an effort to conserve water. Adhere to local watering restrictions whether you use a sprinkler system or a hose.
